The Second Great Lesson — The Coming of Life continues the story with the remarkable arrival and development of life on Earth.
From the earliest forms of life in the oceans to plants, sea creatures, amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs, birds and mammals, the story carries children through the extraordinary progression and diversity of life across immense stretches of time.
Our design draws inspiration from the Montessori Timeline of Life, layering creatures from different periods of Earth's history into a colorful stained-glass composition. Look closely and you'll find life emerging from the sea, taking hold on land, adapting, changing and becoming increasingly diverse.
The Second Great Lesson invites children to wonder not only about the creatures that came before us, but about the relationships connecting all living things and the incredible story that allowed life to flourish on our planet.
From the smallest beginnings came an extraordinary diversity of life.
This design began as part of an original series of nearly three-foot-tall stained-glass panels we created for a local Montessori school. The finished glass artwork was handcrafted by a stained-glass artist and installed as a permanent part of the school's environment. We've adapted that original artwork into our Great Lessons apparel collection so Montessorians can carry these stories beyond the classroom.
