The Fourth Great Lesson — The Story of Writing explores one of humanity's most powerful inventions: our ability to preserve ideas and communicate them across distance, cultures and generations.
Long before the alphabet we recognize today, people found ways to record their thoughts and tell their stories. From pictures and symbols to early writing systems, alphabets and eventually the written word, human beings developed new ways to make their ideas last beyond the moment in which they were created.
Our design brings pieces of that remarkable journey together through symbols and forms of written communication from across history, eventually leading to the written language children encounter today.
And we've hidden something in the artwork.
Look closely at all of the symbols incorporated into the design. There's a written message waiting to be decoded. See if you—or your students—can translate it!
The Fourth Great Lesson reminds us that writing does something extraordinary: it allows an idea created by one human mind to travel across time and find another.
A thought can last far longer than the person who first put it into words.
This design began as part of an original series of nearly three-foot-tall stained-glass panels we created for a local Montessori school. The finished glass artwork was handcrafted by a stained-glass artist and installed as a permanent part of the school's environment. We've adapted that original artwork into our Great Lessons apparel collection so Montessorians can carry these stories beyond the classroom.
