The Great Lessons are one of the most memorable and unique parts of the Montessori elementary curriculum—stories designed to awaken imagination, curiosity, and wonder. Our Stained Glass Series celebrates each of these remarkable stories through original artwork created especially for the Montessori community.
The First Great Lesson — The Coming of the Universe and Earth begins with the biggest story of all.
From the formation of the universe and the birth of stars to our solar system and the formation of Earth, this Great Lesson invites children to look beyond themselves and begin exploring the extraordinary story of how our world came to be.
Our design captures that sense of scale and wonder through a sweeping view of the solar system, with planets traveling along their paths through the darkness of space and Earth taking its place within a much larger universe.
And just as the First Great Lesson opens the door to countless questions about astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology and the forces that shape our planet, we hope the artwork inspires another question:
What else is out there to discover?
This design began as part of an original series of nearly three-foot-tall stained-glass panels we created for a local Montessori school. The finished glass artwork was handcrafted by a stained-glass artist and installed as a permanent part of the school's environment. We've adapted that original artwork into our Great Lessons apparel collection so Montessorians can carry these stories beyond the classroom.
